Good morning, {{first_name}} !

Ask yourself- How efficient is my life? Now- How effective is my life?

⚡ F5 Fast Files — Short Summary

  • Efficiency is an optimized path from A to B

  • Effectiveness is success for your desired result

  • My life is wildly inefficient, which is the very thing effectively molding me into the man I want to become AND adding beauty to this life along the way.

I work in AI, right?

If I had to sum up the purpose of AI in one word: Optimization.

We give the AI system a goal, define how it scores points, and it will learn to get from Point A to Point B in the fastest, cheapest, straightest way possible.

We call that efficiency:

“Achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense.”

And by that definition…

My life right now is WILDLY inefficient.

🌀 A Week of Inefficiency

Here are just a few moments from the last week:

Family life:
As the father of littles, nothing is fast, short, or smooth. Not getting in the car. Not eating dinner. Not getting ready for the day. Okay, sometimes naps are fast and short.

Building my house:
I was laying plywood on trusses above my garage for storage. After hauling the first sheet up the ladder, I realized I had the rough side facing up. No problem — I’ll just flip it over. Except… you can’t flip a 48” sheet in a 45” space.
Getting stuck was easy. Getting unstuck — rough side still up — was not.

At church:
I watched two young men administered the sacrament. One spoke the prayer softly and haltingly, to the point that I felt the desire to finish his sentence. But he said every word exactly correct.

The other, newly graduated from a power chair, slowly passed around the sacrament tray using a walker — ever so slowly moving row by row with help from his father. All the way to the back.

(Shoutout to my son, who pointed at the walker and not whispered, “That’s cool!” ❤️)

Was this the most efficient way to administer the sacrament? Maybe not...

but was it effective?

🎯 A Better Target

As I thought about these inefficiencies in my life, I got a little emotional. My life right now is NOT efficient. What a blessing!

Efficiency has a place in a man’s life, like efficient morning routines or positive habits. These things help when they’re in line with our intended result (effectiveness), but ‘a rhythm’ turns into ‘a rut’ quickly when mindless efficiency is stealing the color from life.

Inefficiencies are not always bugs in the system. They bring color and beauty to life!

They are the sparkle. The joy!

In fact, they are The Meaning of life! We just need to look with the right results in mind.

Let’s shoot for Effectiveness instead: “To be successful in producing a desired or intended result.”

God is perfectly effective.

His desired result is clear:

“This is my work and my glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”

And sometimes, the most effective path looks inefficient to the observer.

  • 40 years in the wilderness

  • Washing 7 times in the river Jordan

  • Put teenagers in charge of a sacramental ordinance each week.

  • Him working through the limitations and shortcomings we all have.

🔔 This Week’s Invitation

Take a moment with these:

  • Where in my life am I frustrated by “inefficiency” right now?

  • Is there something that situation is teaching me that speed never could?

  • Am I optimizing for comfort, or growth?

  • If God’s goal is my becoming — how might this season be serving that goal?

Instead of trying to eliminate every inefficiency this week:

👉 Name one “inefficient” moment you’ll stay present in.

👉 Resist rushing it, fixing it, or optimizing it away.

👉 Ask: “Who is this shaping me into?”

Those slow, awkward, inconvenient moments?

They’re not in the way.

They are the way.
