Good morning!
When’s the last time you smiled just because? When’s the last time you laughed during your stressful moment? Having fun and ENJOYING what we do in this life is a true life hack! Forget the “to-do” list, make it a “Get to-do this” list.
Someone at the gym this morning smiled and waved between my sets of pushups. Signaling like they wanted to talk, so I pulled my headphones out and said hello. “Did you start training for your next race?” they asked, pointing at my St George Ironman t-shirt.
That’s where my workout ended - I missing the last 3 exercises because we talked about racing until I had to hurry out the door. As I buzzed home I thought about how my ‘rise and grind’ kind of morning had shifted from dutiful discipline to smiling at sunrise.
⚡️ F5 Fast Files - Short Summary
Discipline ≠ Misery - You can work hard and enjoy the journey.
Duty without Joy leads to disconnection - Presence brings the Fun back.
Dates matter, but attitude matters more - Fun isn’t scheduled, it’s chosen.
“Men are that they might have JOY” - Don’t get so serious you miss it.
📣 HUGE shoutout to our F5 brother, Josh who worked super hard and has shed a ton of weight in the last year! Thanks for inspiring us with your dedication and hard work, brother. 💪
😃 Discipline Can Smile
Here’s where I have been getting it wrong for the last while. Discipline and Joy are not mutually exclusive. When’s the last time you smiled at work? During your workout? In a meeting? You can diligently work toward your goals and have a TON of fun along the way. You get to choose how you “Grin and Bear it.”
Should you skip portions of your workout all the time? No, but you also shouldn’t take things so seriously that you miss the small joys found in everyday interactions!
🎉 Fun! Remember Fun?!
10 years ago as I was finishing my Missionary service, my mission president pulled me in for an exit interview. For some reason, I was ultra nervous and shaking like a leaf. I’m sure he could see this when I walked in. Instead of getting straight to business or asking me a bunch of questions, he told one of the craziest, most hilarious stories I’ve ever heard.
He said one time an apostle visited his Stake, and while they were on the stand, his counselor had fallen asleep next to him. In his sleepy state, he had snot dripping off his nose. In an effort to stop the gross display on the stand, he woke his counselor up. In doing so, the counselor turned his head, and the snot went clear across the row and landed on the apostles suit coat. My mission President laughed, I laughed. And the rest of our interview was a joy.
❤️ Presence > Planning
No wonder it’s so easy to fall into “the roommate phase” rather than keeping the flame alive! We don’t arrive there because we lack love, but because we over emphasize duty! Responsibilities overcrowd our calendar, there’s no time for fun. Then we schedule time for fun, but we may have our mind stuck in productivity mode!
In trying to achieve great faith, family, fitness, and finance; make sure there’s some brain power and creativity left to power the “fun”!
Guys, yes you should go on dates. Real ones where you schedule time to treat your love to a good time and be present with them. However, if scheduled time is the only Fun time on your agenda you don’t need more dates, you need a new attitude.
Presence is the solution you’re looking for, mix it with a healthy dose of patience and a scoop of humor. This is the formula that changes spills at breakfast into laughter, car rides into karaoke cabins, and awkward silence into stupid grins.
The hack isn’t scheduling time, it’s choosing Fun more often!
🔥 Fun Isn’t Optional
I put Fun in the core values of F5 because I need that reminder all too often. It’s a wonderful thing to pursue your ambitions, I believe we are meant to grow here on this planet, but please don’t forget that “men are that they might have joy.”
Here’s to a Fun week! Keep Smiling,
Justin & Jared
